The kenku originated in the far West, on the great island that bounds the Aegir Sea from the Amerlath Ocean, the children of Vhodan's ravens, Memory and Sorrow. They were a proud and noble people whom the princes of the Esgierden and Vandiiren sought for counsel. That came to an end some three centuries ago when the La-Kai-Tsu crossed the Amerlath Ocean in their great ships. The People of the Immortal Empress soon discovered the ruins of the City of Iron and Brass and subjected the whole island to their reign. Those of the kenku who did not flee became slaves to the Empire of Ma-La-Kai-Tsu.
One clan of the kenku made its way eastward and settled around Lake Umbra and claim to have built the foundations of Ravensgate. Their druids proclaimed it to have been the original home of the kenku, in the days before the legendary northern kingdom of Kalavala was destroyed by the black sorcery of the Pohjola Hills. When humans from Callain expanded northward over the last century, they were forced to migrate again found a new nesting ground at Griffon's Eyrie.
The proud Riders of the Eyrie remembered Vhodan of old, and have granted the kenku their protection. From time to time, they send longships down the Tiyrsblod River to trade (and/or thieve) across the Cerianne Sea, whether to the princes of the Ossiri March, up the great Danu River into Urlaen to the west, south to the Callain Empire, or east to the mighty fortress cities of Khazarmarlok.
